Census Numbering 1841

Because of the complications caused by the Parish of Bellie being split between Moray and Banffshire, and because of the further complication caused by the emergence (as a distinct administrative entity) of the Parish of Enzie, there are problems in describing the Enumeration Districts of the 1841 Census. In particular, the 1841 Census was originally organised quite independently in the Baffshire and Morayshire parts of the parish, and each section had 3 Enumeration Districts. However, because of the 1891 reorganisation of County and Parish boundaries, Bellie is nowadays usually thought of as a parish of Moray, and the microfilm of the 1841 Census for both parts of Bellie appears on the Moray film. As a result, there are duplicated ED numbers. To avoid ambiguity, the normal system of referring to the Census by "ED numbers" is here abandoned in favour of the "Folio numbers". These are the numbers which appear on the outside of each Census book, and which will be found on the Census microfilms on the frame immediately preceding the description of each Enumeration District.

Folio ED description comments
1 1 So much of the Village of Fochabers as lies on the North side of the Main Street … part of Bellie (MOR)
2 2 So much of the Village of Fochabers as lies on the South side of the Main Street … part of Bellie (MOR)
3 3 The rest of the Parish of Bellie in Morayshire … part of Bellie (MOR)
4 1 So much of the Parish of Bellie as lies between the Sea on the North … part of Bellie (BAN)
5 2 The rest of the Parish of Bellie in Banffshire … part of Bellie (BAN)
6 3 So much of the Quoad Sacra Parish of Enzie as lies in the Parish of Bellie The Enumerators got seriously confused, here, as this is actually a partial copy of the preceding ED. In any case, Enzie was enumerated as 'part of Rathven' and appears on the Banffshire film
